Migraines: solutions according to Ayurveda

Migraine is a severe & painful long-term health condition.

If you have migraines, you may have migraine attacks.

During the attack, one has to go through with unbearable headache. Pain may be on the left side of the head only, or on the right side, or in the forehead, including the eyes or, maybe, the entire head, including both eyes.

The pain of migraine used to be felt during 2-3 or 4 hours a day. The patient actually requires proper medical guidance/treatment. But, if somebody is experiencing the headache once or twice a week, that's normal headache.

It may occurs because of stress, over workload of the office, improper food/sleep, lifestyle... You don't need the doctor for common headache, you should observe daily routine, habits, foods etc.

According to Ayurveda: "The patient can be his own best doctor if he observes himself intelligently."

Many of us might have noticed that sometimes we make our problem more complicated because of doing opposite things. For example: intake of yogurt, green vegetables or fruits in the night specially increase kapha problems...

In Ayurveda eliminating the cause of disease is the 1st step of treatment.

In Ayurveda we are working on healing the root cause of the disease.

Here, for migraines, there may be one or many causes. But in Ayurveda the cause of all the diseases is Imbalance of Doshas. So you must observe your routine, habits, food, sleep, everyday symptoms of migraines (or any other problems) & mental state too.

Pitta:

Migraine or severe headache is caused by excessive creation of Pitta (bile, acids). This is a general conception. In that case, you must stop those foods, activities which creates the excessive acids in the body...

For excessive pitta, you should first take aloe vera juice, pumpkin juice, wheatgrass juice, asparagus roots... etc.

Kapha :

If migraine is caused by Kapha dosha then first you must stop consuming food that increases the Kapha dosha in the body.

For that you should add some herbs in daily routine like ginger, holy basil, black pepper, giloy, turmeric, cloves... etc.

Vata :

If migraine is caused by excessive Vata then you must stop vata food & activities.

For that, you should add these things in your food: ghee, milk, ginger, turmeric, sesame oil, almond oil, everyday massage...

Some of the common Yogic & Ayurvedic tips would be helpful:

  • Everyday massage of head, eyebrows, eyes, temples, neck & soles of the feet. All the tips of the fingers specially both thumbs. If possible take full body massage (pressing the acupressure points or marma bindu). Acupressure is highly effective technique.

  • If possible, can go in Panchkarma center for Shirodhara treatment.

  • Cold & warm Patti (cotton cloth wet in warm & then in cold water) on the forehead & throat... 5 times, two times a day.

  • Apply the paste (sandalwood + chickpeas flour + rose water can add lavender oil) on your face or entire head with the face.

  • Add some of the brain food on your diet: almonds, walnuts, raisins, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds, sesame seeds, turmeric, ginger,...

Compulsively:

Jal Neti & soft kapalbhati to dry the nostrils. After that, you must put ghee or almond oil in the nostrils in Shavasana.

  • Nasya:

Everyday, put bhrami ghee, or plain cow ghee or almond oil (3 to 5 drops) in both nostrils. After putting 2-3 drops, deeply inhale through the nostrils & exhale by the mouth. Two times a day. (Read the article of nasya)

  • Asanas:

Everyday practice (compulsively) Pavanamuktasana Series 01 slowly & gently with adding some asanas: Yogamudrasana, Balasana or Shasankasana, setubandhasana, easy vipreetkarni asana & shavasana.

  • Pranayama:

Nadi shodhanam 10 to 15 minutes (2 times a day without kumbakha) and add Bhramari. If this is the hot season, then add in your practice 05-07 minutes Chandra Bhedana Pranayama.

  • Meditation:

In yogic culture, we believe that the cause of all diseases is undisciplined mind. To make the mind in order, meditation is the best tool. So you should practice some of the techniques of meditation twice a day, for 10-15 minutes (early morning and before the sleep).

Some suggestions as a friend ☺️ for experiments:

  1. For 2-3 weeks, avoid the brain/nervous stimulant foods like: non-vegetarian food, smoking, tobacco, alcohol & observe the effects. If you get some success then keep maintain the same diet.

If not, then:

  1. 2nd experiment: with all above items avoid all the dairy food products, chocolates, onion, garlic...

  • Note: during this month, keep following the other Yogic & Ayurvedic tips. Observe & write your experience.

  • Always be optimistic, be happy & be humble with others... Don't say to yourself my problem is incurable or I will never come out from this state of suffering...

Hope your mind & inner self will help you to heal completely 🙏
